Personal Statement First Semester - 2132 Words

Daphney Sihwa Personal Statement First semester in college, first time without my family, first time ever leaving Zimbabwe, all these first experiences seemed to just come crushing into my face when I started my freshmen year in the fall of 2013 at Spelman College. Everything from my room, people, technology, language barriers and culture seemed so magnified and rather overwhelming. For a very long time, I wished I could pack my bags and go back home because that’s all I ever thought about. Everyone knew about that African girl who never said anything. The thought of trying to make people understand me drained all my energy and all the questions about how I lived with elephants in the jungle just didn’t do it for me, it was too much! I decided to find a daily routine that would make me comfortable: wake up, go to class, eat, do homework, sleep and do the same thing the next day. But was this bubble that I had chosen to reside in what I really wanted? I pondered. Well maybe not, beca use my comfort zone wasn t so comfortable after all. It did not only affect my social life but my academics as well as I had my worst college GPA in the fall of 2013. Thus, I had to break out of that bubble. I was one in ten of the Andrew Young Scholars that were at Spelman College. I was selected to be the liaison between the Higher life Foundation and the scholars.
